Street Theater: Way to disseminate message

“Street theatre is arguably the oldest form of theatre in existence.”1
“Street theater is an activity where members of your group act out a short story in a public location to educate passers-by about the group’s work. To draw attention to a particular issue, create a skit illustrating a point.”2
Street theater is a common activity for the dissemination of information or message among the people, who might not have ever been to, or been able to afford to go to the theatre. It might be arranged on/beside a street, near the shopping centers, school ground, small marketplaces in villages and somewhere like that. Off-course the main focus of the positioning is the public gatherings as the aim is to disseminate a special information or message. So far I could understand, it is very much effective for the dissemination of information that is to build awareness among people. In our country, I have seen this activity commonly done for education & public health issues.
No doubt, it’s an effective way to make people informed what is targeted to. But the issue is about the implication of these messages. My understanding is that if it’s an issue about the profession of the viewers or regarding a major issue of life, it has great impact. But if it’s about the family life, or is to apply at home, it’s not that much effective. In the public health, many issues are to be implemented at home or around home.
On the other hand, it’s beyond any debate that students are a great media for dissemination of information among the community. A research, titled “School-based participatory health education for malaria control in Ghana: engaging children as health messengers”, has concluded “School-based malaria education intervention engaging school children as health messengers had a substantial impact not only on school children, but also on community adults in improving knowledge on cause and prevention and bed net impregnation practices. The improved knowledge and practices could be associated with the decrease in the malaria prevalence observed in the school children.”3
This conclusion made me think about the involvement of students in the social communication activities like street theater, folk song and so on. If it’s possible to involve school students, I think, it will result a tremendous awareness among the community which the development workers are looking for.

indeed students involvement can enhance this type of promotion more quickly. however, this students involvement may depend on their study pressure and acceptance, where as acceptance may/should be created by the students.

For any health message, we may need to consider the age and sex.
