A way to involve students in Street Theater

In my previous post, I tried to make a clear understanding about street theater & at the end of the discussion; I supposed to involve students for greater effectiveness. Now, my objective is to explain the way to involve students in order to achieve greater awareness.

We may first take a look on the traditional procedure/steps taken to make it happen. Though street theater is not a huge effort, we can divide it in the following steps (for the convenience of my discussion):

     1. Agreement with an local professional group,

     2. Providing an outline - specially about the focal issue & messages to be delivered,

     3. Preparing & finalizing the script after review,

     4. Selecting the persons to perform followed by rehearsal,

     5. Selection of time & place and announcement accordingly &

     6. Finally the performance.

If we try to search ways to involve students in the above steps, we can at best involve in step 3 & 4. The way to involve in step 3 is nothing but to prepare the script which might be reviewed by the implementing group & organization. Where, giving them a chance to perform a specific role in the theater.

My view is Involving in preparing script would be much easier. I would propose to prepare the script through a competition among the student where winner of the competition will be given a prize. The benefits, we can expect, are as follows:

     1. The competition will motivate them to do the best,

     2. The prize, as recognition of performance, will drive them toward gathering enough knowledge about the specific issues as the pre-requisite of better performance,

     3. Usually, students are not from a small village, rather from scattered area which will help to the dissemination of information of that event all around,

     4. Finally, they will attend the theater willingly.

You may argue that it will increase the cost to give prizes. But I will say not the prizes but Prize. In our country context, we should be able to make it possible with very negligible amount. As, students’ focus would be upon winning rather getting valuables.

Street Theater: Way to disseminate message

“Street theatre is arguably the oldest form of theatre in existence.”1
“Street theater is an activity where members of your group act out a short story in a public location to educate passers-by about the group’s work. To draw attention to a particular issue, create a skit illustrating a point.”2
Street theater is a common activity for the dissemination of information or message among the people, who might not have ever been to, or been able to afford to go to the theatre. It might be arranged on/beside a street, near the shopping centers, school ground, small marketplaces in villages and somewhere like that. Off-course the main focus of the positioning is the public gatherings as the aim is to disseminate a special information or message. So far I could understand, it is very much effective for the dissemination of information that is to build awareness among people. In our country, I have seen this activity commonly done for education & public health issues.
No doubt, it’s an effective way to make people informed what is targeted to. But the issue is about the implication of these messages. My understanding is that if it’s an issue about the profession of the viewers or regarding a major issue of life, it has great impact. But if it’s about the family life, or is to apply at home, it’s not that much effective. In the public health, many issues are to be implemented at home or around home.
On the other hand, it’s beyond any debate that students are a great media for dissemination of information among the community. A research, titled “School-based participatory health education for malaria control in Ghana: engaging children as health messengers”, has concluded “School-based malaria education intervention engaging school children as health messengers had a substantial impact not only on school children, but also on community adults in improving knowledge on cause and prevention and bed net impregnation practices. The improved knowledge and practices could be associated with the decrease in the malaria prevalence observed in the school children.”3
This conclusion made me think about the involvement of students in the social communication activities like street theater, folk song and so on. If it’s possible to involve school students, I think, it will result a tremendous awareness among the community which the development workers are looking for.
